Social Responsibility: What is it?
Starting out at the complete basics, maybe you’re interested in socially responsible marketing but still have a few questions, what makes it responsible? Why is it my duty to market responsibly?
What is it?
It’s all to do with ethics, like some what of an ethical frame work that suggests an entity, (referring to an organisation in this case but could refer to an individual as well) has an underlying obligation to act for the benefit of society. It’s a duty everyone has to perform to maintain balance in their society, between the economy and the ecosystem.
There may be some form of trade-off between economic development in terms of materials and the welfare of the surrounding environment. When it comes to the actual meaning, socially responsible marketing means keeping that equilibrium balanced, so you take, but you also are giving equally. It doesn’t just apply to businesses, it applies to everyone who’s actions impact the surrounding environment.
To be able to relate, in terms of an individual living in a community, you love the grounds, it’s your home and it keeps you happy. How does it stay put though? By you, who may pick up litter every now and then when you’re on a walk, by the guy across the road that trims communal bushes, or the lady down the street who cuts the grass.
It’s nothing that is set in stone saying you have to do it, it’s just considered showing respect, a kind gesture to the land that makes you so happy on a daily basis. Taking responsibility for what needs help because it can’t stay happy or ‘groomed’ on it’s own. In other words, your surroundings looks after you, you have an underlying responsibility to look after it as well!
When it comes to a business in a community, you are like a celebrity. A celebrity is nothing without their fans, in the same sense that your business wouldn’t be able to function without the surrounding community supporting you. This is why you need to thank the community by doing something to better it, and in the process that will make people want to do business with you even more.
There are so many others that need help and so little who are willing to give it to them, be a good person! Help out your community, show off your social responsibility, plus it works in your favor because people who support their community are preferred among customers.
